Agua de Horchata Recipe

step by step tutorial

Agua de Horchata is the perfect drink to refresh you this summer. This is a traditional agua fresca (fresh water) that we enjoy in Mexican gatherings and has been my favorite drink since I was a kid! The blend of milks, rice, and cinnamon give this drink a perfectly creamy consistency and the splash of vanilla seals the deal.

Today I’m sharing the perfect recipe with you.

INGREDIENTS

2 cups rice

3 cups of water (2 of them need to be hot and the other cup room temperature)

2 cinnamon sticks

2 64 oz containers of RICE DREAM RICE DRINK (rice milk)

4 cups of sugar

2 cans evaporated milk

2 cans sweetened condensed milk

1/2 tbsp cinnamon

2-64 oz containers of plain water

1 huge bag of ice

4 tbsp vanilla

DIRECTIONS

  1. Microwave 2 cups of water for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Meanwhile, place the rice in a deep bowl, add in the cinnamon sticks. When the water is ready pour it over the rice and cinnamon sticks. Add in an additional cup of room temperature water. And allow the rice water to rest between 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  2. After 30 minutes to 1 hour, blend the rice water mixture for approximately 7 minutes, or until the cinnamon is well blended and the pieces are smaller. Prepare the container you will use. This recipe is enough to serve approximately 25 people. I used a 10 quart pot to make this water. With the help of a sieve, pour in the rice water blended mixture into your pot and help the mixture pass through the sieve using a spatula.
  3. Add in the rice milk, and save the boxes, make sure to refill those boxes with plain water and add in that amount of water. Continue adding all of the ingredients until you reach the ice.
  4. At this point what we have in our pot is a concentrate mixture, this will be overly sweet and creamy. I opted to add in the remainder amount left of the pot in ice. You can use a blend of ice and water but if it’s a hot summer day I recommend opting for the ice. The ice will help to balance the sweetness and will turn this concentrate into a more diluted drink.
  5. Serve in a glass with ice and enjoy!NOTE: please note that this recipe is doubled and serves approximately 25-30 people.
